My Book Buddy Library
In 2011, the founder of the My Book Buddy Foundation, Cathy Spierenburg from the Netherlands, visited a primary school in the Netherlands with the aim of supporting a project abroad. Diego Lokhorst, born in Medellín and adopted, raised his hand and said he would go to Colombia that summer. Diego's parents contacted the Fundación Caminos and thus created the possibility of establishing their own library within the foundation.
The wooden shelves were made in Medellín to stimulate the local economy. Books are purchased from local bookstores in the city center. The foundation has organized the administration and established the rules, so the library is open and kids can borrow books.
Method
At the foundation the My Book Buddy shelves are full of books for all levels and for all interests. This is very important because this is a condition to arouse children's interest in reading. Many activities are organized and children can read a book at the foundation or borrow a book to read at home. Everything is registered and the child must return a week later to return the book or extend the loan time.
Activities
With younger children, weekly activities are organized to promote reading and improve their learning with activities such as reading aloud a book and then discussing it with the other children.
